Teacher Certification

SECONDARY TEACHER CERTIFICATION PROGRAMS

Offered in conjunction with the School of Education and Social Sciences, students pursuing degrees in Biology or in Applied Mathematics may choose to pursue a concentration in Secondary Education, resulting in PA Department of Education licensure to teach in grades 7-12.

Biology Education

Students seeking secondary biology certification will earn a Bachelor’s degree in Biology. Along with RMU core courses and other science courses, students take their electives in Education. A program completer consequently has a degree in Biology with the necessary and required pedagogy to teach Biology at the secondary level in PA. The program includes a multitude of education content and pedagogy courses, as well as field experiences, and a semester of pre-student teaching. Mathematics Education

Students seeking secondary mathematics certification will earn a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Mathematics. Along with RMU core courses and other mathematics courses, students take their electives in Education. A program completer consequently has a degree in Mathematics with the necessary and required pedagogy to teach mathematics at the secondary level in PA. The program includes a multitude of education content and pedagogy courses, as well as field experiences, and a semester of pre-student teaching. SEMS Teacher Certification Program Coordinators

Dr. Matthew J. Maurer is the Biology Education Program Coordinator. He holds the rank of Associate Professor and is also the Co-Director of the SEMS Research & Outreach Center, responsible for coordinating all STEM education, outreach, and student engagement for SEMS. He received his Bachelor’s degree from Heidelberg College, and his Masters and Ph.D. from The Ohio State University. His research interests focus primarily on innovative forms of teacher professional development, as well as developing effective STEM outreach initiatives. Dr. E. Gregory Holdan, Associate Professor of Mathematics and Education, is the Secondary Mathematics Teacher Certification Coordinator. He received his M.A. in Mathematics and Ph.D. in Curriculum and Instruction from Penn State. He also holds a Secondary Supervisors Certificate and a Secondary Principals Certificate. He joined the faculty at RMU after 32 years of mathematics teaching in the Mt. Lebanon School District, with experience at both the middle school and high school levels.
